Wikidot data forms make it possible to build simple applications into your wikidot sites. A normal wiki page holds unstructured text. A wiki page with a data form holds structured data ("fields"). Structured data is easier to edit, to understand, and to work with in many cases.

Here are some examples of where data forms might work better than simple wiki pages:

  • You're collecting references for your thesis, and for each reference you want to record it title, author, ISBN, date of issue, publisher, and language. With a data form with one field for each piece of data, you can easily produce reference lists in any format.
  • You're organizing your club membership and for each member you want a page with their name, email address and so on. By using a data form you can extract fields like the email address to send everyone a newsletter.
  • You're cataloguing your video game collection and using a data form means you can search on games by console, by publisher, and so on.

While Wikidot forms are still pretty simple they already have a neat feature called "page paths" which lets you link the form to wiki page trees. It sounds complex but lets you do things like build category trees and then use them. For example, a category tree of video game genres.

There's a simple demo site at forms.wikidot.com.
